I.                    In class we discussed how the movie Casablanca was such an American classic. I figured that much since that was one of two films that rung a bell on day one of class when the list of the movies we would be seeing was handed out. The other being The Godfather which I never got a chance to watch in its entirety since it is so long, Marlon Brandos soft voice in it, and it only comes on television about once a year. We also discussed how it was an American classic despite being based in Africa. This movie had a weird reception as it dealt with world war two which we were involved in and it was unclear whether we were going to win or not. Also they shot endings and none of the actors knew which one was going to make the final cut I thought that was only something they did now a days to try and get you to buy the DVDs by pitching an alternate ending.

This article deals with the lead man in Casablanca Humphrey Bogart. He was born in New York City and died in Los Angeles of cancer in his esophagus. He had both a critically acclaimed father who was a surgeon and a mother who was a famed magazine illustrator. His most memorable role was in Casablanca.
III.                As you can see the world lost the great Humphrey Bogart way too early to cancer. One of the greatest actors to live and that was in full display in Casablanca were he

played a character who was reunited by the one that got away by pure faith and chance in a foreign rich American army base in Africa. One of the lines that suck out to me was when he said “out of all the cities in the world why would you put her in mine” talking to god. That stuck with me because the world is huge and she could’ve been anywhere in the world but she landed in the same exact town he was in. Something that interested me was the fact that they shot two endings and the actors didn’t know which one would get kept I thought that was only a modern day thing Hollywood did to get people to buy DVDs with the alternate ending.
IV.                In all this was a good movie not one of my personal favorites of the course though. My top 3 still remains Grapes of wrath, His Girl Friday and The Gold Rush. Im looking forward to the godfather and the other movie with Dustin Hoffman as a leading man which I am having a hard time believing.
